Infant Nutrition and Newborn Nutrition – What you should give to your baby or Avoid:
Babies are a great blessing. It is very much important to take care of your baby. The most crucial part of taking care of your baby is his/her nutrition. Just like everyone else babies get their energy and nutrients from food. For a baby, Breastmilk is the best choice as food because breastmilk fulfils most of nutrient requirements of baby till 6 months. There are also infant formulas available just in case mother is not available to breastfeed or she decides not to.
Infants usually are ready to eat other foods after 6 months. It is very important to focus on what you give to your baby. You should start complementary feeding (feeding other than breastmilk or formula milk) with introducing single new food, in this way you will be able to identify if your baby is allergic to that specific food or not. Allergic reactions may include a rash, diarrhea, or vomiting.
The foods you should avoid feeding your baby during Infant and Newborn Nutrition:
- Do not give honey to your baby before 1 year. Honey may contain bacteria that can cause Botulism
- Avoid cow’s milk for 1 year. Baby may not be able to digest nutrients in milk
- Unpasteurized drinks or foods (such as juices, milks, yogurt, or cheeses) may put your child at risk for an E. coli infection. E coli is a harmful bacterium that can cause severe diarrhoea
- Foods that can cause choking such as candy, whole nuts, popcorn, and grapes should not introduced unless they are cut into small pieces. Avoid them to the age of 3 years
